Project Overview:

  • You will work in teams of up to 2 students (a reporter and a videographer, and you swap roles next time).
  • You must choose to make your video either 30 seconds or 45 seconds long.
  • Your video must be a preview, a milestone, or a profile (reading regular game scores stays separate).

Weekly Schedule:

  • Friday: Your project is assigned and you pick your topic and length.
  • Friday to Tuesday: You will shoot and edit your video, and get fixes from your producer.
  • Tuesday: The final video is due at the end of class.
  • Wednesday: The weekly show is recorded.
  • Thursday: Your video airs on the Sports segment.

8 Steps to Make Your Sports Video:

  1. Plan: Choose your focus sentence and write a shot list of 8-10 planned shots.
  2. Confirm the Facts: Check every name, statistic, and number with a coach or results page before you shoot. Plan 2 interviews with 5-8 questions.
  3. Shoot: Film your shots using a tripod and hold each shot for 10 seconds without staging. Have your interviewees say and spell their name.
  4. Bite + Script: Pick one interview thought (a "bite") that is 8-12 seconds long. Write down the timecode and a 3-word out-cue.
  5. Edit: Put your interview bite in the timeline first. Add your b-roll clips (3-4 seconds each) over the voice-over. Add name graphics (lower thirds).
  6. Draft + Fixes: Send your draft to your producer. The producer will give you 1-3 fixes that you must complete before your final video.
  7. Final Check: Check your video with the sound off, and then listen with your eyes closed. Make sure all names and stats are correct.
  8. Turn In Final: Complete your video by Tuesday at the end of class. Fill out every field on the Sports Story Submission form and upload your files to OneDrive and Basecamp.
  • It Airs: Your video airs on Thursday's show, and the anchor reads your voice-over script live.
