You will work in teams of 2 and conduct 2 interviews.
Your video target length must be 30, 45, or 60 seconds long.
If you miss the final deadline, you will get a zero on the project until you make it up with a new assignment. If you need more time, you must ask Fitz before the deadline.
Weekly Schedule:
Friday: You are assigned a story, or you can pitch one on Monday.
Monday: Plan your story and shoot your video.
Tuesday: Your script and video drafts are due at the start of class.
Wednesday: Your final video and script are due by 7:30 a.m. for recording.
Thursday: Your video airs on show day.
Steps to Make Your News Video:
Plan: Write a focus sentence (who, what, why) and confirm your facts. Make a list of 8-10 shots.
Shoot B-Roll: Film real action (do not stage it) and hold each shot for 10 seconds without zooming. Wear headphones to record background (nat) sound.
Get the Sound Bite: Do your interview in a quiet spot. Ask the person to say and spell their name and title. Get an 8-12 second clip (a "bite") that shows one feeling.
Write the Script: Write short sentences in the present tense. Remember that 2.5 words equal 1 second of video.
Edit: Put your interview bite in the timeline first. Add 3-4 seconds of B-roll over your voice-over (VO). Add name graphics (lower thirds) for 4 seconds.
Drafts Due: Send your script and video drafts at the start of class on Tuesday using the News Story Form. The producer will review it and flag anything you need to fix.
Final Check: Watch your video with the sound off, then listen with your eyes closed to check your work. Make sure the facts and audio are correct, and fix any mistakes.
Turn In Final: Submit your final script and upload your video to OneDrive and Basecamp by 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday.
It Airs: The anchor will read your script live while your video plays on Thursday, and it will be graded using a rubric.
